Install the Shield Web extension

Updated July 16, 2026·2 min read·Last validated for v0.1.13All plans

Shield Web is the browser extension that monitors and enforces your organization's AI usage policies directly in your browser — Chrome (and every Chromium browser), Microsoft Edge, and Firefox. Installing it takes about two minutes.

Install from the Chrome Web Store

  1. Open the Shield Web listing in the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Select Add to Chrome and confirm the permission prompt.
  3. Pin the extension: select the puzzle-piece icon in the Chrome toolbar, then the pin next to Shield Web. The Shield icon now shows its protection status at a glance.

Install from Microsoft Edge Add-ons

  1. Open the Shield Web listing on Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
  2. Select Get and confirm the permission prompt.
  3. Pin the extension: select the puzzle-piece icon in the Edge toolbar, then the eye/pin next to Shield Web.

Install from Firefox Add-ons

  1. Open the Shield Web listing on Firefox Add-ons.
  2. Select Add to Firefox and confirm the permission prompt.
  3. Pin the extension: select the puzzle-piece icon in the Firefox toolbar, then the gear next to Shield Web and Pin to Toolbar.

Sign in with your work account

Shield Web uses your organization's existing sign-in — there is no separate extension password.

  1. Select the Shield icon in the toolbar.
  2. Choose Sign in and complete the sign-in in the Shield Control window that opens (your organization's SSO applies here).
  3. When the handoff finishes, the popup shows your account and your organization's active policies.

Verify it is working

Open a supported AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The Shield indicator shows that the page is protected, and the side panel lists what applies on the current site.

Using Shield in Incognito mode

Shield Web can protect you in Incognito (private) browsing mode. To enable it:

  1. In Chrome: go to chrome://extensions, find Shield Web, and enable the Incognito permission.
  2. In Edge: go to edge://extensions, find Shield Web, and enable Allow in InPrivate.
  3. In Firefox: go to about:addons, select Shield Web, and set Run in Private Windows to allow.
  4. Shield will now show its protection status in private tabs.

Troubleshooting

  • The extension appears but shows you as signed out — sign in again from the popup; your session may have expired.
  • A policy change is not visible on an already-open tab — reload the tab once; freshly-applied policies attach to new page loads.

Note: if your organization deploys Shield Web via managed policy (MDM or Google Workspace), the extension may already be installed and signed in for you — the steps above are only needed for self-install.
